Weetbix are a well-loved family breakfast staple in many Australian households. It is a quick and easy breakfast option too, which is also a big part of the appeal. Weetbix is also a great source of fibre, energy, protein and iron, so their appeal is as much about nutrition as it is ease!

In 2021 Sanitarium brought out "Weet-Bix Little Kids Essentials" specifically marketed for well…little kids. But does this product justify the increased price tag?

Let's compare the original Weetbix with Weetbix Little Kids

Weetbix Little Kids Weetbix
Cost $1.15/100g $0.42/100g
Sodium 4mg 84mg
Sugar (added) 1g 0.9g
Protein 4.1g 3.8g
Fibre 4.1g 4g
Calcium 121mg 0g
Iron 3mg 3mg

Comparison per serve= 2 biscuits

What we LOVE about this product is the added calcium and low sodium. Especially before the age of 1 when we are really trying to minimise salt for babies. The calcium is great but of less importance if you have a bub or toddler that is getting calcium from dairy and soy foods. There is also calcium in formula and breastmilk. However, if you have a little one approaching 1, so weaning milk feeds, and is also soy/dairy free Weetbix little kids offers another great source of calcium for their diet.

The take home:
Both are excellent products. Before 1, if you are only offering Weetbix every now and then for your bub the sodium content isn't something to be worried about. If you are including Weetbix regularly as part of their brekky then picking the ultra-low sodium option is a good choice. Once your little one passes the one-year milestone, we are less concerned about sodium so moving to the original Weetbix is fine. There are lots of other great Weetbix style options out there too!

When thinking brekky cereals, keep an eye on:

  • Sodium content -aiming for <120mg per 100g where you can, to keep it low sodium.
  • Sugar- aiming for less than 15g per 100g to keep it low to moderate in sugar content. Lower is better where you can!
  • Added iron is a bonus, especially if you have a fussy eater than isn't great with meat
