Beef & Vegetable Lasagne (Baby & Toddler Pouch Project Recipe | 6+ Months)

Written by: Jeanette Blandford | Published on June 01, 2026

Our Pouch Project remake of the Rafferty's Garden Beef & Hearty Vegetable Lasagne pouch — a saucy, iron-rich beef and veg pasta that babies and toddlers love.

One pan, freezer-friendly, suitable from around 6 months, and roughly half the cost of the pouch.

Welcome to Pouch Project – where we take those oh-so-popular baby food pouch flavours and remake them at home with better balance, better nutrition and a better price. Each recipe recreates a supermarket pouch from scratch so you can see exactly what goes in, how it stacks up, and how much you save.

In this one we're recreating the Rafferty's Garden Beef & Hearty Vegetable Lasagne pouch (10+ months, 170g). You can read our full review of this pouch here.

Rafferty's Pouch — Ingredient Breakdown

Water, Tomato (27%), Lasagnette Pasta (Wheat), Carrot (7%), Beef (5%), Onion (3%), Modified Corn Starch, Parmesan Cheese (Milk), Garlic, Basil, Oregano, Parsley.

Cost: ~$3.00 per 170g pouch (~$1.76 per 100g)

Beef: 5% • Age: 10+ months • Allergens: Milk, Gluten (wheat); may contain egg

Our Pouch Project Version — Ingredient Breakdown

Beef mince, tomato passata, wholemeal pasta, carrot, baby spinach, olive oil, garlic and dried herbs. No modified starches, no yeast extract — just real food.

Cost: ~$9.00 makes a ~1,100g batch (about six 170g serves) — roughly $0.82 per 100g or about $1.40 a serve (approximate, based on standard supermarket prices)

Allergens: Wheat (pasta) only

The Difference

• Around half the cost per 100g — one batch makes about six pouches' worth for the price of three.

Much more beef for a bigger iron and protein hit, versus 5% beef in the pouch.

Dairy-free as written (the pouch contains milk), so it suits more babies.

No fillers — no modified corn starch or yeast extract.

Suitable earlier — from around 6 months with simple texture changes, where the pouch is labelled 10+ months.

Quick Recipe Snapshot

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 15 minutes

Serves: ~6 baby and toddler portions (a ~1,100g batch)

Freezer friendly: Yes

Texture: Soft, saucy pasta — blend, mash or serve as soft pieces

Age & Texture Guidance

Suitable from around 6 months with a little modification. For younger babies, blend or mash to a smooth-to-lumpy texture and cut the pasta small. From around 9+ months, or when your bub is ready, serve the soft pasta and mince as is for little hands to practise self-feeding. Every baby develops differently, so follow your little one's lead and pick the texture that suits their stage.

Beef & Vegetable Lasagne (Pouch Project Copycat | Baby & Toddler Recipe)

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 500g beef mince
  • 80g carrot, finely grated
  • 1 cup (30g) baby spinach, finely chopped
  • 700g tomato passata
  • 150g wholemeal (brown) pasta
  • 2 tsp dried parsley
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 cup water (plus extra as needed)

Method

  1. Heat a large frying pan over medium heat and add the olive oil.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the beef mince and cook until browned.
  3. Add the tomato passata, grated carrot, spinach and dried herbs. Stir well to combine.
  4. Add the pasta and stir again. Simmer for 10 minutes, adding extra water as needed, until the pasta is soft and cooked through.
  5. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Blend, mash or chop to suit your baby's stage before serving.

Storage Instructions

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze in portions for up to 2 months. Reheat until piping hot all the way through, then cool to a safe temperature before serving.

Nutrition Notes

Beef mince is a fantastic source of iron and zinc, two nutrients babies need more of from around 6 months. The vitamin C in the tomato and spinach helps your baby absorb that iron, while wholemeal pasta adds fibre and slow-release energy for busy little bodies.

Parent Tip

This sauce is thick and scoopable, which makes it perfect for early spoon practice. Pre-load a Sticky Spoon and let your little one bring it to their mouth — messy, but brilliant for building independence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this for a 6 month old?

Yes — simply blend or mash to a smooth, lump-free texture and cut the pasta very small. As your baby grows you can leave it chunkier.

Can I freeze it?

Absolutely. Freeze in single portions for up to 2 months and defrost in the fridge overnight or gently on the stove.

How is this different from the pouch?

It has far more beef, no modified starches or yeast extract, it's dairy-free as written, and it works out roughly half the cost per 100g.

Can I add cheese?

Yes — if dairy has been safely introduced, a little grated cheese stirred through at the end adds calcium and a lovely creamy flavour.
