Introducing Sesame-one thing every parent should know!

Written by: Jeanette Blandford | Published on May 28, 2025

Firstly, we have a whole other resource here about sesame that discusses the nutritional benefits of sesame and ways to include them in your bubs diet...

BUT, one thing we didn't cover was thing hot tip....

The most allergenic part of the sesame seed is actually the endosperm (inside of the seed). IF you bub is already no solids you'll know that lots of things pass through the gut and come out whole in the stool. Sesame seeds can do this because od the tough protective shell on the outside.

So, when introducing sesame to your bub it is best not to introduce the whole seed but actually either crushing it or using tahini- which is a sesame paste.

You only need a REALLY small amount because it is so concentrated. Like nut butters, we recommend diluting it a little (mixing it with water or puree for example) so it isn't thick and claggy (which can make it a choking hazard).

For ongoing exposure offering hummus on toast or as a dip, tahini in cooking or mixed into weetbix is great, as well as using the whole seeds to sprinkle onto food.
