How To Serve Asparagus For Babies
Asparagus can be safely offered to babies from around 6 months. When cooked until soft, it makes an easy finger food for baby-led weaning.
Can babies eat asparagus?
Yes. Babies can eat asparagus from 6 months. Serve it soft and well-cooked, either as whole spears or cut appropriately for their age.
Allergen
It is not a common allergen and can be included as part of a varied diet.
Is asparagus a choking hazard for babies?
Asparagus is low risk when cooked soft, but its shape can increase choking risk if not prepared properly.
To reduce risk:
• Cook until very soft
• Offer whole spears for younger babies
• Cut lengthways for older babies
• Avoid firm or undercooked pieces
If you can squash it easily between your fingers, it’s safe to serve.
How to serve asparagus for babies
6–9 months
• Pureed asparagus
• Finely minced and mixed into other foods
• Whole soft-cooked asparagus spears. Should be easily pierced with a fork or squished between 2 fingers.
Large pieces are easier for babies to hold and explore.
9–12 months
From this age most babies can tackle smaller bite sized pieces of food. You can still offer it as a puree, minced or a whole spear but you can also cut it up into smaller pieces. However, the long and round shape of asparagus can make it a choking hazard. Cut the spears lengthways before chopping them into smaller bite size pieces so that the asparagus is no longer round. This reduced the risk of choking.
• Small soft pieces
• Spears sliced lengthways, then chopped
• Mixed into meals like pasta or omelettes
12+ months
• Bite-sized pieces
• Served as part of family meals
• Soft vegetable side
