These homemade smokey baked beans are rich, flavourful and a great way to offer a savoury, nutrient-dense meal for babies and the whole family. They’re naturally sweetened with apple and dates, giving that classic baked bean flavour without relying on added sugar.

Homemade Smokey Baked Beans (Baby Friendly Recipe | BLW Friendly)

Ingredients

• 2 cans cannellini beans, rinsed and drained

• 1 red capsicum, finely chopped

• 1 onion, diced

• 1 teaspoon olive oil

• 1 tablespoon minced garlic

• 1 tablespoon smoked paprika

• 140g can tomato paste

• 1 x 400g can diced tomatoes

• 2 dates or prunes, diced (optional)

• 1 apple, grated (or cooked and mashed)

• 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

• 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

• Good crack of pepper

• ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

• Optional: pinch of cayenne pepper

Method

  1. Heat a pot over medium heat and add the olive oil.
  2. Add the garlic, onion and capsicum and cook until softened.
  3. Stir through the smoked paprika and cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Add the tomato paste, diced tomatoes, beans, dates (if using), apple, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, pepper and cinnamon.
  5. Stir well to combine.
  6. Simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  7. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Storage Instructions

Store in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Freeze portions for up to 2 months. Reheat thoroughly before serving.
