Product Review: Only Organic Mango, Chicken & Coconut Rice Pouch
Our review of Only Organic's Mango, Chicken & Coconut Rice pouch (10+ months) — ingredients, nutrition, cost, and why the 5% chicken matters more than the name suggests. Part of our Pouch Project series.
Squeeze pouches are a go-to for busy days, and Only Organic has become one of the more popular NZ-made brands on Australian shelves. We picked up their Mango, Chicken & Coconut Rice pouch (10+ months, 170g, fork mash with soft lumps) to see what's actually in it.
This review is part of our Pouch Project series, where we take popular pouch flavours and remake them at home with better nutrition and better value. We've recreated this one with a lot more chicken — you can find the homemade version here.
What's In It?
Water, Vegetables (Sweet Potato*, Pumpkin*, Carrot*), Mango* (12%), Rice* (6%), Free Range Chicken* (5%), Coconut Milk* (3%). *Certified Organic ingredients.
Allergens
No declared allergens on pack — the ingredient list doesn't include wheat, dairy, egg or soy. Worth a mention for families managing a coconut allergy specifically, since coconut milk is used.
Cost
$3.15 for the 170g pouch, which works out to $1.85 per 100g — on the pricier end for a savoury pouch.
What we like:
- Low sodium — 11mg per 100g (19mg per pouch). We aim for less than 400mg per 100g and ideally closer to 120mg, so this is well within the low range.
- No added sugar — what sweetness is there comes from the mango and vegetables, not an added sugar ingredient.
- Certified organic, with no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives, and certified by AsureQuality Ltd, New Zealand.
- A useful texture step-up — labelled "fork mash with soft lumps," it's chunkier than a smooth puree, more like finely chopped vegetables, which makes it handy for babies moving past purees. Not recommended under 6 months.
What we like less:
- Chicken is only 5% — around 8g in the whole 170g pouch — and coconut milk is just 3%. Between them, mango, rice, chicken and coconut milk make up just 26% of the pouch; the rest is water and the mixed vegetables (sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot), which are listed ahead of the mango on the ingredients panel. There's nothing to be worried about here — no dodgy additives or fillers — it's simply that, like most commercial pouches, the priciest and most nutrient-dense ingredients are used in the smallest amounts, while the name and packaging lead with them.
- Protein is low at 2.1g per 100g (3.6g per pouch), which tracks with how little chicken is actually in the mix.
- Fibre isn't listed on the panel, so there's no way to check it against the 3g-per-serve mark we like to see.
The Take Home:
A clean, low-sodium, no-added-sugar pouch that's genuinely organic — and a handy option if you're after a chunkier "fork mash" texture for a baby moving past purees. Just don't expect much chicken: at 5% (about 8g), it's really a vegetable-and-mango pouch with a hint of chicken rather than a chicken meal, so it's not one to rely on for protein or iron.
When choosing a savoury pouch, it's worth checking where the "feature" protein sits on the ingredients list and what percentage it actually is — it's often down at 5% or lower, no matter how the front of pack reads. If you want more chicken for the same meal, our Pouch Project version of this recipe uses almost eight times as much.
