Apple Pie Baby Mash or Purée

Ingredients

  • 1 x apple peeled and diced
  • 1/3 of a cup of yogurt
  • ¼ of a cup of oats
  • ½ a tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbs of nut meal or nut butter
  • 4 x prunes soaked in boiling water and mashed

What to do

  • Take your prepared apple cook it until super soft.
  • Mash your apple into puree.
  • Mix in the rest of your ingredients and either puree in a blender or fork mash.
  • You can portion and freeze what you do not need.
  • This also makes a great dipping sauce for steamed veggies, a spread on toast or mixed through porridge.

Storage Instructions

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. This mash freezes well — portion it into an ice cube tray or small pots and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge and stir before serving; if reheating, heat until piping hot, then cool to a safe temperature.

Nutrition Notes

This is a far more balanced bowl than a plain apple sauce — apple and oats bring fibre and slow-release energy, yoghurt adds protein and calcium, nut meal or butter offers healthy fats, and the prunes provide gentle fibre that can help keep little bowels moving once solids begin.

Parent Tip

Prunes are a lovely natural helper if bub is finding things a little harder to move along since starting solids. Keep a few cubes of this mash in the freezer for those days.

Frequently Asked Questions

From what age is this apple pie mash suitable?

It's smooth and easy to swallow, so it suits babies from around 6 months. For younger bubs, puree it well; as bub grows you can leave it a little chunkier as a mash.

Can I make it dairy free or nut free?

Yes — swap the yoghurt for a coconut yoghurt to make it dairy free, and simply leave out the nut meal or nut butter if you haven't introduced nuts yet.

Why include prunes?

Prunes add natural fibre that can gently help with constipation, which is common when babies first start solids. They also bring a lovely natural sweetness.

What else can I do with it?

It doubles as a dipping sauce for soft steamed veggies, a spread on toast, or a stir-through for porridge.
