Banana, Blueberry & Quinoa Puree - Pouch Project

Written by: Jeanette Blandford | Published on December 12, 2025

Our Pouch Project remake of the banana, blueberry and quinoa pouch — with five times the blueberries and real quinoa for a purée that's higher in protein, fibre and energy, at nearly half the price per 100g. Ready in minutes and lovely from 6 months.

Welcome to Pouch Project – where we take those oh-so-popular baby food pouch flavours and remake them BETTER. We’re recreating the recipes with better balance and better nutrition, and comparing what's more affordable.

Kicking off the series with Only Organics Banana, Blueberry & Quinoa - You can read our full review on this particular pouch here. The bottom line though is they're basically an expensive mashed banana in a pouch and don't offer much in terms of nutrition that a regular old banana would.

Suitable from around 6 months when starting solids. This makes a very smooth puree to replicate the pouch variety.

Banana, Blueberry & Quinoa Puree

Ingredients

  • 170g Blueberries
  • 250ml (1 Cup) Water
  • 100g (1 Cup) Quinoa Flakes
  • 250g Bananas (2 Small Bananas)

Method

  1. Place a small saucepan over low heat.
  2. Add the blueberries and water to the saucepan. Simmer for 1-2 minutes until soft.
  3. Add the quinoa flakes into the saucepan. Cook for 1-2 minutes while stirring slowly. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Prepare blender jug or food processor. Place peeled bananas inside the blender jug.
  5. Take the blueberry and quinoa mixture and spoon it into the blender jug. Process on medium speed until thin and smooth.

Storage Instructions

Fridge: store in an airtight container and use within 48 hours.

Freezer: portion into silicone trays or reusable pouches and freeze for up to 2 months. Label with the contents and date made, thaw in the fridge overnight and stir well before serving. Serve fridge-cold or gently warmed — always check the temperature before offering it to bub.

Nutrition Notes

Quinoa flakes lift the protein and fibre content well above the commercial pouch, while blueberries add fibre and vitamin C. Banana brings natural sweetness without any added sugar — making this a more balanced brekky or snack than the pouch it replaces.

Parent Tip

Freeze in 120g portions for your own homemade pouches — a thawed portion in a reusable pouch makes an easy on-the-go brekky. It's also lovely stirred through porridge or yoghurt.
