Which High Chair Is The Right High Chair?
One of the questions we get asked almost daily is "what highchair do you recommend and why?"
Choosing baby gear is so overwhelming and is often complicated by the various opinions of well-meaning friends and family that always seem to contradict each other!
Things to consider:
-
Does it provide good support?
-
How easy is it to clean?
-
Does it have a 5 point quick release safety harness?
-
What is the cost?
-
Do suction plates actually stick to it?
-
Will it grow with them?
The high chair you choose is incredibly important and the price point doesn't always mean "better" either. Correct positioning is crucial in the feeding journey and the wrong highchair can really contribute to feeding problems down the track.
Honestly, although there are lots of options out there, there were none that ticked ALL of the boxes for us as mums, paediatric dietitians and feeding therapists. So we set to work to design our own dream high chair. Introducing the Rora High Chair! It has been lovingly and meticulously designed to have every feature we wanted and also knew little people needed to have.
So let's work through the above KEY criteria and explain why this is the only chair you will need.
Easy to Clean - This is number one on the list for a lot of parents! Let's be honest! Little people make a lot of mess and this mean we spend a good amount of our day cleaning up things we never had to before! Nobody wants to make this any harder by choosing a highchair that has loads of little nooks and crannies that get full of food! This chair is so easy to clean and our favourite features:
- The straps come off so you can wash them
- The tray is dishwasher safe (this is the absolute BEST feature) but also super easy to wipe down if it doesn't need a full decontamination
- The Rora cushion inserts are not only beautiful, comfortable and offer additional support for bub but are also machine washable!
Promotes Good Posture - This means no slumping or slouching. The Rora chair has been designed to ensure that your little one, no matter their age or size, are able to meet the 90-90-90 rule when sitting. This means that when your little one is in the chair they have 90-degree angles at the ankles, knees and hips! This position is important because it:
- is considered safer for eating and swallowing
- is more comfortable so they are more likely to enjoy being in the chair and engaging with meal times
- promotes better posture and control and the ability to practice fine motor skills
Adjustable footrest - This is probably one of the most important ones! For baby to have that nice 90-degree angle at the knees and ankle they need to have a nice firm footrest at the right height to plant their little footsies on! If your chair doesn't have this, you will end up having to mess around with separately purchased footrests that may not fit your chair properly! The Rora has endless options for the footrest height meaning you will always be able to find the right position for your little one.
Safety First- Any chair you use should have a 5 point safety harness that can be QUICKLY released in the event of choking. Although choking is unlikely, you don't want to be fumbling with straps in an emergency. The Rora harness has a quick release 5 point harness so you can get bub out quickly but is also securely attached to the chair, providing added safety and peace of mind while they are strapped in. Suitable for use at any height, the harness has a weight limit of 25kg, ensuring your child's safety during every stage of their high chair journey.
Removable Tray - This one is important so you can take the tray off and push baby directly up against the dinner table so they can be part of the family meals from day one! Babies learn by watching us and modelling what we do so including them in our family mealtimes is a great way to start of their relationship with food! The Rora tray can be taken off completely and the style of the chair means it can get nice and close to the dinner table. Something a lot of other chairs aren't able to do if they have the bucket style seat.
Does the tray allow you to use suction plates? The baby kit includes a smooth tray, perfect for compatibility with suction plates and bowls. Many trays out there on the market are textured- which means they are difficult to clean but also suction plates don't suction well! This thoughtful addition not only simplifies mealtime but also promotes independent eating skills from an early age.
Grows with your child and cost - This one is important for your budget and sustainability. Why buy 2 separate chairs when you can buy one right? Most kids will transition from a highchair to a booster that sits on a regular chair around the age of 2 and most will require some sort of booster to sit them at the right height at the dinner table until they are around the age of 4-5. The Rora grows with your child to suit them as long as they need one! It even transitions to a full-size adult chair once it's no longer needed for your little one! Talk about sustainability!! So cost per use just went down (mum math right there).
