A nourishing 2-ingredient baby custard made with egg yolks and full-fat milk - no added sugar, unlike most shop-bought options. Smooth, simple and endlessly flavourable.

So many commercial baby custards are filled with added sugar, or bulked out and sweetened with lots of fruit. So we’ve created our own 2 ingredient baby custard made with nourishing egg yolks and full fat milk - which you can then flavour with anything you have at home like pumpkin, nut butters, sweet potato, pear, oats or seeds.

Babies First Custard Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 egg yolks
  • 3/4 of a cup of full fat milk

Directions

  • Place you milk into a saucepan on the stove and bring it to the boil then turn off the heat.
  • Seperate your egg whites and the yolk into a bowl (you can keep the whites and use them later. You can even freeze them).
  • Whisk your yolks in the bowl. Now keep whisking and slowing add in your hot milk.
  • Once the milk has been added to the bowl, transfer it back to the sauce pan and place in back on the stove on a low heat.
  • Continue stirring on the stove until it has thickened.
  • Now remove from the heat and add in any additions you want to flavour it.

Our favourite flavour combinations to add:

  • Mashed pear, vanilla and oats
  • Grated carrot, almond butter and avocado
  • Roasted beetroot, peanut butter and hemp seeds
  • Puree spinach, apple and blueberries

Storage Instructions

Store the custard in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Stir well before serving. This custard isn't ideal for freezing as the texture can split, so it's best made fresh.

Nutrition Notes

Unlike many shop-bought custards loaded with added sugar, this version is built on nourishing egg yolks and full-fat milk — providing protein, healthy fats, choline and calcium. A smooth, naturally savoury-sweet base you can flavour however you like.

Parent Tip

The smooth texture is perfect for little ones just starting solids. Flavour it with whatever you have at home — pumpkin, nut butters, sweet potato, pear, oats or seeds — to add variety and nutrition.
