Product Review: Sunsol Low Sugar Natural Muesli
Sunsol Low Sugar Natural Muesli is a relatively new product and one that packs quite a nutritional punch. It’s made from very simple ingredients — essentially whole grains, nuts and seeds — with no added sugar, making it a strong option nutritionally for babies, toddlers and kids compared to many other cereals on the shelf.
What’s In It?
Whole Grains (75%) (Oats (66%), Wheat, Barley, Tri ticale (Wheat, Rye)), Seeds (Sunflower Seeds (4%), Pepitas (2%), Linseeds (2%)), Split Cashews (5%), Whole and Diced Almonds (5%), Wheat Bran Straws ( 3%), Halved Macadamias (2%), Quartered Walnuts (2% ).
Cost
Around $6 per box, or about $1.20 per 100g. It’s not the cheapest cereal option available, but nutritionally it offers a lot. You could make your own version by combining the different grains, seeds and nuts yourself however given the cost of most nuts it's unlikely to be a great deal cheaper.
Allergens
Contains: Gluten, Almond, Cashew, Macadamia, Walnut, Wheat
May contain: Milk, Peanuts, Sesame, Soy, Lupin, Pine Nut, Hazelnut, Pecan, Brazil Nut, Pistachio
We wouldn't recommend this as a first introduction to these allergens given how many are present however it is a very easy way to keep up ongoing exposure to several tree nuts in one meal. Given the small amount of nuts in the mix it's not guaranteed to have every nut in each serving however as a complimentary offering to other nut exposure it could be beneficial.
Taste
This is quite a tasty cereal. It's nutty and flavoursome. Despite the nuts being a small percentage of the ingredients the flavours are very obvious.
Texture / Age Recommendation
Given this muesli has chopped nuts and whole seeds present it would be a choking hazard for younger babies without modification. Adding milk or yogurt will soften the oatmeal but won't soften the nuts. Served as is we would recommend for 18 months and above. Be mindful to check for any large pieces of nuts when serving.
This muesli can very easily be made into a version suitable from around 6 months by adding your babies milk or water, allowing it to sit for 5 minutes and then blending until smooth. Check out our full recipe here.

How to Serve to Balance the Meal
Serving muesli with yoghurt and fruit works really well and helps soften the texture. For younger children, letting it soak in milk or yoghurt first can make it easier to eat.
